Cold Facts

mpj042437900001I recently learned the difference between a viral infection (of the common cold) and a bacterial infection.  Of course I found this out by being sick for the last three days.  I seem to forget how unpleasant it is taking care of a serious sore throat, congestion, aching body and that coming and going nauseous feeling.  So what is the difference?  Viral infection is highly contagious but not as unpleasant as a bacterial infection.

Viral infection: Lasts up to 10 days and is easily passed onto those around you.  The symptoms usually are; a mild sore throat, runny nose, sometimes fever and pain in the body. There are usually no antibiotics prescribed for a viral infection.

Bacterial infection: Can last longer then 10 days and requires that you take antibiotics. The symptoms usually are; high fever, congestion, sore throat, chronic cough and aching body.

Other differences: Viral infections are caused by viruses and Bacterial infections are caused by bacteria.  Bacteria is a living microorganism that can be good or bad and can live on non-living objects. Viruses are not living organisms.  They are capsules of genetic material and required a living host in order to spread.

It is important to know the difference between the two because they do not require the same type of medication.  The best way to not spread bacteria or viruses is by washing your hands frequently, stay away from being close to people who are sick and always cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing.  Clean hygiene, such as clean work and living surfaces as well as sleeping conditions are all part of keeping healthy during the flu season.  Always consult your doctor when you are feeling sick and it is probably a good idea to take a day or two off to rest and prevent from getting your co-workers sick.

Helpful tip – One of the best, natural ways to prepare for the flu and cold season is by drinking black tea. It has been proven that drinking 5 cups of black tea for two to four weeks boost the body’s immune system by four times increasing the body’s natural resistance to infection. Hope you are feeling better!
