Time For Tea

Cliveden House

Cliveden House, outside London, boasts a lovely spa and a fascinating history.

Cliveden House is a very British, 350-year-old estate set in the countryside outside London, with lovely views of the River Thames. The Italianate mansion, surrounded by close to 380 acres, has a storied—and scandalous—history. That, along with its gorgeous grounds and impeccable service, are what make it such a delicious spot for a wedding, a romantic getaway or an event that deserves to be feted in a restaurant with a five-star chef.

After hosting a series of royal indiscretions, dating back to the late 17th century, Cliveden was bought, 200 years later, by William Astor, the richest man in America at the time. Astor restored the now five-star Relais & Chateaux to its former glory, and it was passed down through the Astor family, until scandal hit Cliveden once again, when it became the site of the international incident now known as “The Profumo Affair.” Profumo involved a liaison between Christine Keeler, a showgirl, and a high-up in the British Cabinet.

Now a luxury hotel, with a recent spa renovation, it is a stunning place to stroll the grounds, enjoy the renovated spa and pool, and relax with a spot of tea.
