Daxxify: The first vegan neuromodulator. So what does that mean exactly?

by Isabel Burton

It’s considered a vegan beauty breakthrough as the only wrinkle-reducing neuromodulator approved by the FDA.  And it has people talking. Curious? We were too—so we asked two top dermatologists to explain the news.

Why Daxxify has the beauty world buzzing:

"Daxxify is newsy because it’s the first and only peptide-powered neuromodulator that is FDA-approved to smooth moderate to severe frown lines (glabellar lines). explains Marina Peredo, M.D., board-certified dermatologist, and founder of Skinfluence in NYC and of Skinfluence skincare.

The Vegan Breakthrough:

Neuromodulators require proteins that act as stabilizers and help the formula connect with nerve receptors to relax the muscle. Until now, that protein has come from animal sources. "Daxxify is powered by what’s called Peptide Exchange Technology (PXT), which is the company’s (Revance) proprietary, synthetic, 35-amino-acid peptide,” says Dr. Peredo. “PXT replaces animal protein and keeps the product vegan."

How Daxxify Works:

"That peptide enhances attachment of the active ingredient, botulinum toxin A,” says Dr. Peredo. “When Daxxify is injected, it blocks certain nerve signals that make muscles contract. The muscles relax, reducing unwanted wrinkles. And it does its work with as few as 2 treatments per year. Additionally, Daxxify enhances the skin’s texture following treatment. The effects kick in quickly—two to three days—and typically last for five to six months.”

Who is Daxxify for?

"Anyone looking to improve the appearance of frown lines, particularly those seeking results that act fast, last, and look natural," says Ellen Marmur, board-certified dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon, and founder of Marmur Medical in NYC and of MMSkincare and MMSphere.

The Process:

"Daxxify injections are administered using a small needle, which patients often describe as similar to a pinch,” says Dr. Marmur. “However, with patients I always discuss options like using a topical numbing cream, or applying ice. Patients can resume their normal activities right after their appointment. It's important to note that some patients may experience minor, temporary swelling, redness, or tenderness around the injection site that resolves quickly. Daxxify is generally safe and well tolerated; there are no serious adverse events reported in relation to treatment.”

The Future of Vegan Cosmetic Treatments:

"It’s incredibly promising, particularly with innovations like Daxxify leading the way with their peptide technology,” says Dr. Marmur. “This breakthrough not only aligns with the growing demand for vegan and cruelty-free products but also sets a new standard for efficacy and safety in cosmetic treatments."
