Longevity in Ecuador

Portrait of an Eco Lodge

Madre Tierra is a beautiful spa and resort located in what many refer to as "The Valley of Longevity." Centrally located in Vilcabamba, Ecuador, in the Loja Province, this area has been given this name because of the concentration of locals here who live to be over 100 years old.

Contributing factors include diet and lifestyle. The many fruits, vegetables, herbs and roots that grow in this equatorial sub-area have some of the strongest antioxidant properties in the world.

This area, its claims and the people that live here were originally introduced to the world via a cover story for National Geographic back in 1973. in his book, The Secret to a Youthful Long Life, medical journalist Dr. Morton Walker spoke about the mineral-rich water found here. And Ecuador is currently one of the few places in the word that has not allowed Monsanto and GMO seeds into their country.

They don't typically import fruits and vegetables from anyplace else, so the level of eating pure you experience is quite unique (especially in this region) which is home to many biodynamic farmers. All of theses factors along with beautiful weather, views and nice people make it the perfect location for an amazing spa and resort.

Madre Tierra Spa and Resort is nestled in a lush tropical environment surrounded by palm trees with beautiful mountain views. Upon entering the property you immediately feel very peaceful as you're greeted by striking rock fountains and the sounds of running water. The fountains also leads to a beautiful pool (with minimum chlorine). The property is located on several with cascading views making it feel like an outdoor tropical castle. There is a also a complete feeling of solitude here, as you lay in a hammock on the balcony outside your room, listen to the birds and stare out at the Andes.

The spa and resort is family owned and operated, and they make it a point of knowing all of the guests by name. They offer healthy breakfast, lunch and dinner and an array of smoothies and juices. This is an excellent place to create your own raw food or juice regiment during your stay, while utilizing some of the detox services from the spa. The spa at Madre Tierra is very special offering several organic services with ingredients sourced from the region. Here are a few highlights:

Clay Bath: Made from Vilcumbumba Highlands clay its mixed with water from local wells, and essential oils. The clay is then heated, and left on the body for 20 to 30 minutes. This stimulates the immune system and detoxes the skin.

Facial: The facials use natural/organic ingredients from their farm or other places in the region. After a clay mask, they tone the skin with an infusion of rose water, honey, vitamin E and egg yolk. A massage of the heck, shoulders and head complete the experience.

Colon Cleanse Therapy: The colon is gently irrigated using an infusion of herbs, special tea and coffee all from the region. This therapy offers many benefits such as detoxification, cleaning the blood and metabolic balance.

Madre Tierra Spa and Resort runs year round making any time a good time to visit The Valley of Longevity.
