Mellowing Out at The Farmhouse, Northern California

by Margie Goldsmith

Hidden behind a forested country lane in Sonoma County, Northern California, is the luxurious boutique property, the Farmhouse Inn. Surrounded by serenity, at this idyllic escape butterflies flutter among flowering bushes, and the pathways are lined with apple trees, and herbs such as rosemary, mint and lavender. A spa treatment at the Wellness Barn is a must, followed by relaxing at the outdoor pool (complete with pool toys, loungers, shade umbrellas, and food and beverage service).

Each afternoon, the wine hour features a different vintner partner. Two dining rooms offer casual or gourmet dining (including wine-paired melt-in-your-mouth tasting dinners). After the meal, guests head to the campfire for complimentary Smores (The Farmhouse even makes their own marshmallows).

Upon check in, guests are handed a shopping bag and invited to take as much as they want from an array of complimentary products (the same which are in their rooms). There are three different kinds of hand-made soaps, lavender bath salts, and brown sugar whipped body scrubs. The rooms are spacious with four-poster feathered beds; the suites have an indoor/outdoor fireplace, oversized jetted bathtub, steam shower, curated wine refrigerator, and a large patio overlooking the forest.

Each night, a breakfast menu is left outside the door offering everything from a Farmer’s plate (eggs any way you want them, Hobb’s bacon, potatoes and toast) to Avocado Toast or Torta Española. On the menu are also Mimosas and sparkling wine. Guests take their breakfast in the living room or on the terrace, a quiet and peaceful way to start the day.

The most relaxing feature of this resort is The Wellness Barn, the tranquil spa with a variety of soothing and nurturing treatments. Local products, many from The Farmhouse’s gardens, ae woven together creating custom remedies designed to restore balance and re-energize. At this spa, wellness is a lifestyle, not a quick fix. It’s a place to slow down, reconnect with nature, and connect with your own self. Choose from rejuvenating massages and soaks, facials, private yoga sessions, sound bath meditation, and guided one-on-one forest bathing using mindfulness and meditation techniques to open the senses and connect with nature.

One of the most popular treatments is The CBD Signature Integrated massage, a combination of Swedish, deep issue and lymphatic drainage, tailored to the guest’s preference. It includes Lavender essential oil for inhalation and anti-inflammatory CBD oil to increase circulation, decrease inflammation, and relax the nervous system.

Couples often choose side-by-side treatments while pregnant mothers-to-be indulge in the nurturing Mother Earth treatment. Therapists use nourishing belly balm to promote elasticity and a foot treatment to relieve tension and swelling. Three different bathing rituals help with healing and rejuvenation: the CBD Gemstone Bath uses gemstones representing Earth, Fire, Water, and Air as well as CBD oil; the Moon Milk Bath with herbs based on the phases of the moon (your therapist will remind you that the moon is out, even when we can’t see it); and the Herbal Bath, a hot soak of herbs and citrus. After treatments, guests sip tea at the Wellness Barn’s outdoor relaxation area, eventually floating trance-like back to their rooms.

There is only one major problem with The Farmhouse, and that is, leaving. The good news is that San Francisco International Airport is only one and one-half hours away, so it’s easy to return.
