Uniting for a New Era in Cancer Care

by Lisa Loverro

For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Foundation and Woodloch Resort are proud to announce an extraordinary partnership: the creation of the For Pete’s Sake Cancer Respite Center at Woodloch, the nation’s first onsite respite facility for individuals and families impacted by cancer. Set to open in 2026, this groundbreaking center will provide a transformative space for over 4,000 people annually, redefining cancer care in Pennsylvania and beyond.

For Pete’s Sake has long provided families with meaningful, restorative breaks from cancer, offering opportunities to reconnect and find peace amidst the challenges of a diagnosis. Woodloch Resort, a beloved destination in the Pocono Mountains for over 65 years, shares this commitment to family-centered renewal. Since 2011, these two organizations have collaborated to create supportive, healing experiences for cancer patients, caregivers, and loved ones.

Now, their shared mission takes a giant leap forward with a signature location in Hawley, PA. “So many of us have been touched by this terrible disease,” said project advocate Sen. Lisa Baker. “This center will bring hope and healing to countless families.”

A Space Designed to Heal

The 34,000-square-foot facility will be nestled on 32 acres of serene landscape, with amenities carefully designed in collaboration with oncology experts. Every detail addresses the emotional, physical, spiritual, and financial challenges of cancer, creating a safe and restorative environment. Highlights include a dining room serving 60,000 meals annually, an art therapy room, yoga space, and nature trails for outdoor spaces and reflection.

Changing Lives Through Respite

Since its founding, For Pete’s Sake has partnered with leading cancer centers such as Penn Medicine, Jefferson Health, and UPMC to offer restorative getaways for families navigating cancer. Patients are nominated by their oncology teams, ensuring access to those who need it most.

“Our data shows that respite has a measurable therapeutic impact, improving communication, resilience, and quality of life for patients and their families,” said Marci Schankweiler, founder and CEO of For Pete’s Sake. “We are deeply grateful to the advocates and supporters making this vision a reality, including Gov. Shapiro, Sens. Baker and Brown, and Reps. Fritz and Olsommer.”

Together, For Pete’s Sake and Woodloch are setting a new standard in cancer care—one that prioritizes connection, renewal, and hope for families facing life’s toughest challenges.
